Do You Know What Is Your Skin Type?
Everyone in this world has a different skin texture. Some of us have healthy skin genetically, whereas some of us tend to have dry patches due to various reasons and some may have a mix of both. As soon as you start digging into the world of skincare, you will get to realize that different skincare ingredients react differently to each skin type. Not all products are suitable for all skin types. That is why it becomes necessary to know, analyze, and find out more about your skin type. Now I understand that our skin reacts to various external factors such as climate change, water, pollution, continuous exposure to sunlight, and extremes of temperatures. Therefore, it is always recommended that you keep a tab on your skin regularly and conduct a check every 3-4 months to know if your skin has gone through some transformational changes or not.
So, are you interested to know under which category your skin falls into? If yes, then hop onto this ride where I will take you through all the various skin types that you must know about!
Are You Normal Or Oily?
Hey! Hey! Do not get me wrong here. Normal and oily are the most common skin types found amongst the human population. But before you start judging your skin right away, lets us first have a look at the 5 basic skin types.
- Normal Skin – Normal skin is usually characterized based on its stable sebum production as well as healthy blood circulation. This type of skin is neither too greasy/oily nor too dry and patchy. You must thank your stars if you are blessed with normal skin.
- Oily Skin – This particular skin type is known for its greasy appearance and is always vulnerable to acne breakouts. The primary reason for the excessive oil on your skin is the disproportionate sebum production.
- Dry Skin – If you have a flaky, patchy, and rough skin throughout the year, then your skin falls under this category. There will be times when your skin will feel extremely tight and lead to irritation as well as inflammation. This skin type requires extreme care in the form of regular hydration.
- Sensitive Skin – If your skin tends to flush out with spicy food and reacts to new skincare products now and then, there might be a chance that you have sensitive skin. This particular skin type needs a lot of attention and you must select your skincare and makeup products with extreme care. A small misjudgment might lead to severe acne breakouts.
- Combination Skin – People with combination skin type have the best of both worlds. They usually have a dry cheek area and an oily T-zone (the area covering the center of your forehead, nose, and chin).
Want To Conduct A Test?
Now that you know about the various skin types, I am sure you must be waiting to find out yours! So, I can suggest you a considerably basic test that would help you to analyze the skin type you possess. All you need to do is follow a few basic steps as mentioned below:
- Take a small sheet of blotting paper and start patting it on your face gently.
- Now hold it firmly against sunlight or any bright light.
- If you notice little or no oil at all, you are most likely to have dry skin.
- If your sheet tends to pick up oil from the T-zone, then you must have a combination or maybe normal skin at max.
- In case the sheet picks up oil from all the areas of your face, then you likely have oily skin.
You can make use of this simple yet effective test to decode your actual skin type and get a clearer picture. In case you want to dig deeper and know more about your skin type, then the best option would be to consult a dermatologist and get a medical opinion on the same. It will help you to understand your skin requirements better and prove beneficial in the long run.
Why Do You Need To Know?
The most obvious question that pops up here is that why do you even need to know about your skin type in the first place? Honestly, the answer is quite simple. There might be instances where you purchase a skincare product and it turns out to be a major disaster for your skin within a few days. What do you think is the reason behind such an outbreak? Well, it is the mismatch of your skin type and the product ingredients. It has been observed by researchers globally that all kinds of commercial skin products do not suit all skin types. Your choice of products has the power to make or break the skincare game for you.
Therefore, you must know about your skin type and what your skin needs from all the products that you use. In this way, you will be able to get a better idea of what to use, when to use, and how to use it!
